What's up in the Music Room?

The Grade 1 and 2 classes have been working very hard preparing for their upcoming winter concert. They are performing the musical Toys: The Night They Come Alive. The grade 2 concert will be on Dec.10th and the the grade 1 concert will be on Dec. 12. The students have been learning songs, actions and dances, and some have been learning instrument parts and the actors have been learning their lines.

Our Remembrance Day assembly this year was lead by our Grade 4 students, including the grade 4 choir. They did an amazing job! In the music room they have been learning a piece of music called Autumn Wind which incorporates poetry, movement, sound effects (using non-pitched instruments such as the woodblock, hand drum or guiro), melody and an ostinato (repeated musical phrase) using the barred instruments.

The kindergarten classes have continued to explore beat, rhythm and different non-pitched instruments including the maracas, woodblocks, tambourines and hand drums. We have been learning about volume and how we can play and sing quietly and loudly and how the tempo can change from slow to fast.

The grade 3s have been learning about improvisation and different rhythmic patterns. They have been using many of the barred instruments and improving their technique. They have also been working on developing their singing skills. Some of our favorite musical pieces include Down at the Baker's Shop and  Hilly and Gully Rider, as well as performing different rhythms and movements using the rhythm sticks.

The Grade 3 and 4 students have also has the opportunity to play the Boomwhackers to songs related to Halloween. It was a lot of fun!
